Caring for Amber

Amber is a soft gemstone and must be treated with care.  

Avoid contact with hairsprays and perfumes as these and other chemicals can cause damage.  Whenever possible, put your jewellery on last.

Exposure to excessive heat and light can also have long-term negative effects on its appearance and condition.

Avoid knocking your amber on hard surfaces.  

Store it in a fabric bag or wrapped in a soft cloth, not an air-tight bag.

If our amber jewellery needs to be cleaned or polished, use a mild, non-perfumed soap with warm water, carefully polishing it dry with a soft cloth.

Never clean amber with a chemically treated cloth such as those used to clean silver, gold and other metals.

Commercial jewellery cleaners (liquid or paste) should not be used to clean amber.

Antique amber may lose its surface sheen.  Try soaking a soft cloth (chamois) in olive oil and polishing the amber with it to bring up the luster.
