All silver naturally tarnishes, however, with a little attention
it will remain as new.
Humidity and chemicals cause silver to tarnish as well as
natural oxidization. The most tarnishing causing items are foods
(onions, eggs, mayonnaise, salad dressings, salt), rubber and oily
residue from our hands.
Whenever possible, put your jewellery on last. Avoid
contact with hairsprays and perfumes as these and other chemicals
can damage silver.
After wearing your silver jewellery clean it gently with a soft
cloth - one that is specially treated to clean and protect the
item. Always polish it in a back and forth motion rather than
circular to maintain a uniform appearance.
It is best to store your silver jewellery in an air-tight
plastic bag.
It is also useful to wash silver in a phosphate-free detergent,
drying it immediately. If washing in a metal sink do not
permit the silver to touch the sink as this can cause
scratches.
Never use toothpaste, dried-up solid polishers or any type of
abrasive cloth or pad. Commercial polishers that are the least
abrasive are 3M's Tarni-Shield Silver Polish and Twinkle Silver
Polish.
